Abram S. Clemens, 89, of Elm Terrace Gardens, Lansdale, New Jersey and Tioga County, died Nov. 11 in Central Montgomery Medical Center, Lansdale. He was married to Lillian (Hoch) Clemens and to the late Laura F. (Kriebel) Clemens.
He was an owner since 1940 of Hatfield Quality Meats, founded as Pleasant Valley Packing, Mainland, Montgomery County, by his father in 1895. He was treasurer and administrator of the company and later a board member and consultant.
He was co-founder in 1939 of Clemens Family Market grocery chain in the Philadelphia area, serving as president until retiring in 1978 and as a board member and consultant.
Born in Mainland, he was a son of the late John C. and Susie (Stauffer) Clemens.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lansdale, and its choir, served on the board of deacons and board of trustees, and was chairman of the building committee.
He was a 34-year member of the board of Eastern University, St. Davids, Delaware County, and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wynnewood, Montgomery County, which awarded him an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
He established the Clemens Foundation and served as its president. He was a founder of Elm Terrace Gardens.
Survivors: Wife; daughters, Janice F. Tyson of Morris, Pa., Suzanne C. Harris of Lansdale; brother, Lester S. of Souderton; sisters, Hannah Stettler and Mary Gross, both of Souderton, Betty Bradford of Lansdale; seven grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley A.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Calvary Baptist Church, Lansdale. Call 4-8 p.m. Friday and 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church. Arrangements, Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
