Irene (Benner) Alderfer, 94, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Harleysville, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Souderton Mennonite Homes. She was the loving wife of the late Isaiah L. Alderfer for 31 years. Irene was born in Souderton, PA to the late Charles H. and Leanna (Yoder) Benner. A graduate of Souderton High School, Class of 1941, she graduated from Eastern Mennonite College, Class of 1952, with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
In 1952, Irene was employed as a 5th grade school teacher at Franconia Mennonite School until the time of her marriage in 1967. She was a volunteer at Care & Share Thrift Shoppes of Souderton.
Irene was an active member of the Perkiomenville Mennonite Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, VBS teacher, former Church council member, and Women’s Bible study group leader. She assisted her husband, Bishop Isaiah Alderfer, who served several small mission churches in up-state Pennsylvania, Putnam, New York, and the Perkiomenville Mennonite Church.
Irene had a keen interest in many forms of art. She enjoyed oil painting, quilting, flower & vegetable gardening, cooking, baking, calligraphy, and drawing with her grandchildren. Irene was a dedicated caregiver to her husband in the latter years of his life. She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and enjoyed spending time daily in God’s Word.
Irene is survived by a son, David L. Alderfer & wife, MaryAnn of Broomall, PA; a step-son, Ralph C. Alderfer of Souderton, PA; three step-daughters, Rhoda A. Benner & husband, Gerald of Ambler, PA, Lois C. Zook & husband, Mervin of Schwenksville, PA, Rachel Hartzler & husband, Bruce of Mount Gilead, OH; a sister, Dorothy Shenk & husband, Paul of Newport News, VA; seventeen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson, Luke.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul Y., Edwin Y., Marvin Y., Merrill Y., and Willard Y. Benner; a sister, Edna Styer; and a step-grandson, Ronald Lee Zook.
Viewings will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017, at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 West Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964 from 6:00 pm–8:00 pm and on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Perkiomenville Mennonite Church, 1836 Gravel Pike, Perkiomenville, PA 18074 from 10:00 am-11:00 am. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Perkiomenville Mennonite Church, 1836 Gravel Pike, Perkiomenville, PA 18074 at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at Souderton Mennonite Church Cemetery.
