Mildred (Landes) Clemens, 91, passed away Aug. 3, 2007 in Dock Terrace, Towamencin. She was married for more than 51 years to the late Jacob R. Clemens, who died in 1987. A longtime, former resident of Allentown and Weikel roads in Lansdale, she moved to the Dock Woods Community in the early 1990s.
Born in Lansdale, she was the only child born to the late Samuel Y. and Emma Norma (Walters) Landes. She graduated from the former Lansdale High School, where she excelled in field hockey and earned a varsity letter.
Both she and her husband were avid tennis players. In the mid 1940s they dedicated two years to mission work in Nazareth, Ethiopia, where she worked various positions in nursing and assisted in surgery.
Mrs. Clemens was primarily dedicated to homemaking and her family. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and was known for her delicious pies. One of the first three women bus drivers hired by the North Penn School District, Mrs. Clemens drove for the district for many years. She was also a driver for Hagey Bus Service and the former Green Baron Florist.
A longtime member of Plains Mennonite Church, she participated in the Women's Sewing Circle activities and taught Sunday school and summer Bible school.
Surviving were four children, Robert L. Clemens and his wife, Cheryl, of Colleyville, TX, Thomas L. Clemens and his wife, Priscilla, of Birmingham, AL,Timothy L. Clemens and his wife, Evangeline, of Telford, and Mary Ann Hagey and her husband, Brian, of Lansdale; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Clara.
Her funeral service was held in the Plains Mennonite Church in Hatfield on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.
