Obituary: The Rev. Joseph L. Gross, Mennonite minister and bishop, a resident of the Hatfield Mennonite Homes, died Saturday morning (10/2/1991) in the skilled nursing unit of Dock Terrace Nursing Homes, Towamencin, where he had lived the past five weeks. He was 87. The Rev. Gross was the husband of the late Bertha (Alderfer) Gross, who died in 1984. Born (6/12/1904) in Fountainville, he was the son of the late Abram G. and Sarah Ann (Lapp) Gross. The Rev. Gross had lived most of his lifetime in Doylestown before moving to Hatfield four years ago. As a young man, for several years he had sold Friehoffer Baking Co. products door-to-door in the Doylestown area. Later he and his brother, Titus, sold and delivered fresh meats in Doylestown. He had also worked in the hardware department of the former, Nyce's Planing Mill in Doylestown. Rev. Gross was ordained to the ministry and served the Doylestown Mennonite Church until retiring in 1970. In 1944 he was ordained a bishop to oversee congregations in the Eastern District of the Franconia Mennonite Conference. He was a lifelong member of the Doylestown Mennonite Church. Surviving were a daughter, Doris G., wife of Dr. Virgil G.Soltzfus of Valparaiso, IN; a foster daughter, Laura Gilmore Peterson of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Priscilla Gross, both of Doylestown. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hannah and Edith Gross, and five brothers, Phares, Titus, Hiram, Abram and William Gross. Funeral services were held Oct. 9, 1991 at Doylestown Mennonite Church; burial was in the adjoining cemetery. |
