Donald E. Bechtel, 83, of Upper Providence Township, formerly of Graterford, husband of Lillian M. (Bowman) Bechtel, and widower of Evelyn A. (Detwiler) Bechtel, died Tuesday afternoon, June 17, 2003, in his home.
Born in Upper Providence, he was a son of the late Frank and Elsie (Ettinger) Bechtel.
He worked as an assembler for the B.F. Goodrich Tire Manufacturing Company, Oaks, for more than 42 years until his retirement in 1982. Mr. Bechtel attended schools in Upper Providence and Collegeville. He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific. Mr. Bechtel was a member of Valley Forge Baptist Temple for a number of years. He was a member of the Goodrich Retiree's Club, the AARP in Royersford, and the Limerick Bowman's Club.
In addition to his wife of 19 years, Mr. Bechtel is survived by three sons, Donald Bechtel of Arkansas, Dennis Bechtel of Port Allegany, McKeon County, and Robert Bechtel of Downingtown; one daughter, Debra Weikel of Royersford; two stepsons, Kenneth Seewagen of Mount Holly, New Jersey, and Clifton Seewagen of Bally; two stepdaughters, Priscilla Rau of Bethlehem, and Patricia Schwartz of Coopersburg, Lehigh County; one sister, Anna Childs of New York; 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Valley Forge Baptist Temple, Route 113 at Black Rock Road, Collegeville, with Rev. Scott E. Wendal officiating. Burial will be in Limerick Garden of Memories. Calling hours will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
