Obituary: Norman A. Derstine‚ 87‚ of Towamencin Twp.‚ formerly of Franconia‚ died Thursday‚ Sept. 23‚ 2004‚ at the Dock Community in Towamencin Twp. He was the husband of Lizzie (Nyce) Derstine for 66 years. Born in Franconia‚ he was a son of the late Henry and Katie (Alderfer) Derstine. At the age of 11‚ he began living and working on the Harleysville farm of his sister‚ Minnie A. Anders and her husband‚ Reuben. Sunday mornings he would ride his bike to his home in Franconia and then return to the farm Sunday evening. At the age of 15 in 1932‚ he began working for Hallman's Creamery in Franconia Twp. When he was 16‚ he became the creamery's deliveryman and used his initiative to find new customers. From 1942 to 1949‚ he operated a store in Kensington‚ where he sold butter‚ eggs‚ poultry and produce. In 1949‚ he purchased the former Bucher's Creamery‚ relocated to Franconia and changed the name to Derstine's Farm Maid Butter. After selling the business in 1967 to John Keller‚ he continued to work at Keller's Creamery in Harleysville in sales and customer relations until 1974. He then worked for Bergey's Inc. in Franconia‚ where he delivered parts and shuttled cars. Mr. Derstine was a longtime member of Salford Mennonite Church in Harleysville. |
