Simple fraktur bookplate with inscription: "Dieses Gesangbuch Gehoret Mir Barbara Letherman" "written the 16th of March, 1862". Design consists of a bird on a branch and a branch of flowers. Colors: yellow, red, green, blue. Artist unknown. In 1848 Zions Harfe (hymnbook). |
Provenance |
Probably made for Barbara O. Leatherman (High) (1841-1926), daughter of John & Barbara Overholt Leatherman of Bedminster Township, Bucks County (or possibly for her mother). The younger Barbara married Abraham K. High (1833-1914) and they are buried in the Deep Run East Mennonite Cemetery. The donor's husband was their grandson. According to the Leatherman genealogy, Barbara & Abraham High were married in November 1861, after which her name would have been High rather than Leatherman, which makes her ownership of this plate somewhat questionable because it is clearly dated 1862. It was possibly made for her mother, Barbara Overholt Leatherman (1798-1872). The plate was probably made by nephew/grandson Peter L. Detweiler (1844-1896) at age 18. Perhaps he was teaching school at the time. In the 1870 census his occupation is listed as carpenter. Compare this piece with item #2013.29.1, which is signed P.D., and with item #2015.21.1, a bookplate with a very similar design done by a child who may have been a student of Peter Detweiler's in the German school at Deep Run in early 1896. This piece also bears similarity to the work of Isaac L. Kulp (1849-1915). Were Kulp and Detweiler learning fraktur from the same teacher circa 1860? |
