Description This overshot coverlet is comprised of two woven panels handstitched together, made using bleached cotton and green, red and blue wool. The predominate pattern is a repeated eight-point star and diamond design. On the right, left and bottom sides there is a 4.00" wide border comprised of a longer and thinner diamond and star pattern. There is 3.50" long applied cotton and wool fringe attached to the right, left and bottom edges. On the lighter side, a cotton sleeve has been attached by museum staff for display purposes.
Provenance This coverlet was probably woven by Abraham Wismer (1756-1844), a weaver based out Bedminster Township, Bucks County. Records indicate this coverlet comes out of the family of his son Abraham (1791-1859). The coverlet was then passed down to his son, Samuel L. Wismer (1814-1898), then to his son Eli K. Wismer (1844-1919), and finally to his son, the donor.
