At the bottom there is 4.50" wide attached bleached plain weave linen panel with the cross-stitched name "CATHARINA BORGHOLDER" [Catharine Borgholder] with the year "1826" located underneath, both in faded red cotton. There is evidence of a portion of a cross border along the bottom. The edge of the panel is either frayed or there was once self-fringe that has worn away. The top, right and left edge have a 1/4" wide foldover hem.
Provenance Made by Catharine Borgholder [Burkholder], but there is no additional information about the maker of this piece. It is likely the towel came out of Lancaster County. It was bought by the donor at Alderfer Auction, in Hatfield, Pennsylvania in 1989.
