Creator Brachtheiser, Henry, 1762-1788 (attributed)
Place of Origin Skippack Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
Material Paper, ink
Description Fraktur family register of John and Elizabeth Hall Horning, Skippack, circa 1785, attributed to artist Henry Brachtheiser. First page is decorated with flowers and borders in red, gold and blue, with scripture Matthew 6:33a across the top: "Trachtet am ersten nach dem reich Gottes und nach seiner gerechtigkeit [Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness]." Birth and marriage dates of Johannes Hornung and Elisabet Haall and births of their first two children were written by the fraktur artist. The birth of their third child is missing (daughter Catherine). It appears that this birth was cut out at some point to fit the fraktur into a frame. Births of children continue on a second page (probably also cut down from original folio size), and on the reverse of the second page are two memoranda about John Horning's civil service, one in English and one in German: "Memorandum is to certify that I John Horning have served as Overseer of the poor in the township of Perqueoman and Skippack for the Year 1785 on and for my fathers Estate [his father, Ludwig Horning, died in 1802]. Witness present, Jno Tyson, Jacob Horning" and "Anno 1789 hab ich John Horning das Constable amt befind solches bezeugt Henrich Hunsicker [In the year 1789, I, John Horning, was in the office of Constable, witnessed by Henry Hunsicker].
Provenance John Horning (1755-1803) and wife Elizabeth Hall Horning (1761-1824) resided in Skippack Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After John's early death at age 48, Elizabeth remarried to widower John Detweiler (1747-1826) of Franconia, a Funkite minister and son-in-law of bishop Christian Funk.

This piece was formerly in the collections of Earl and Ada Robacker and Eugene E. Derryberry; purchased by the MHC at Freeman's Auction on 11/15/2017. Conservation had previously been done; the first page is mounted on rice paper.
