Fine, linen hand towel made and decorated by Elizabeth Ruth. Has an embroidered drawn-work cotton panel at the bottom with the initials E. R. Motifs on the towel, done in red silk cross-stitch, include eight-pointed stars, birds, flowering plants, and the name "Elizabeth Ruth, 1836." Designs on the drawn-work panel include geese, stars, hearts, and flowers. |
Provenance |
Decorated hand towel made in 1836 by Elizabeth Ruth (1819-1888) of Franconia Township, Montgomery County. She was the daughter of Jacob and Catharine Ruth Ruth, and later married Christian D. Landis (1815-1894). The towel was passed down from mother to daughter for five generations, from Elizabeth Ruth Landis, to Susan Landis Moyer, to Lizzie Moyer Nice, to Katie Alverda Nice Hendricks, to Beulah Hendricks Rittenhouse (the donor). |
