Provenance |
Made for Catherine D. Hunsberger (1813-1894), daughter of Henry & Catherine Derstine Hunsberger of Hilltown Township. Her father was bishop in the Perkasie (now Blooming Glen) Mennonite congregation. She never married. This pieced passed to her younger brother Jacob D. Hunsberger and eventually to his great-granddaughter, the donor. Attributed to Abraham Clemens (1790-1867), uncle of Catherine Hunsberger on the Derstine side. His son Jacob (b. 1817) would have been only 8 years old in 1825 (if he still lived). According to genealogist Ezra Eby, Jacob died as an infant in 1818. Though his name is on the piece, it was likely made by his father, perhaps as a gift for Catherine to remember her cousin. Compare with similar pieces attributed to Abraham S. Clemens in the collection of the Joseph Schneider Haus, Kitchener, Ontario (some of these were attributed to Abraham Latshaw by author Michael Bird in his book Ontario Fraktur; that attribution seems incorrect; see online records from the Schneider Haus). Abraham Clemens and his family moved from Bucks County to Canada in 1825, where he served as a deacon in the Breslau Mennonite Church. |
