Description Fine, white homespun linen hand towel, decorated entirely in red cotton cross-stitch with traditional PA German motifs and the name and date "Jonas L. Alderfer 1898." Cotton brick-brack border applied at top and near the bottom, as a divider between the main panel and small panel at bottom. The embroidery is in excellent, bright condition (like new).
Provenance Made in 1898 by Annie L. Alderfer (1883-1969) for her brother Jonas L. Alderfer (1881-1974), both of Lower Salford Township. They were the children of Levi S. Alderfer (1849-1904) and Sarah M. Landis Alderfer (1852-1923), and were both living at home. Annie was fifteen and Jonas seventeen. "Jonie" was mentally handicapped and never married--he lived his entire life on the home farm along the Branch Creek, near Groff's Mill in Lower Salford Township. The towel was evidently never hung or displayed, but tucked away in a tall chest-of-drawers where it remained until recently, as that chest was passed down in the family from generation to generation to the donors.
