Description |
Broadside entitled "Christlicher Haus-Segen, Nebst der Zwölf Stunden-Gedächtniß [Chistian House Blessing, with the Twelve Hour Reminder]". A large center heart is surrounded by smaller hearts, number 1 through 12, all containing text. The hearts are surrounded by what appear to be flames of fire. Two rectangular boxes at the bottom also contain text, with a rose above each box. The title is in a box at the top, along with the statement that this broadside can be found in Augsburg. On either side of this box is a ribbon tied in a bow. The bows and roses and three hearts are colored pink; four hearts are green, as is the border; and four hearts are yellow, along with the boxes of text at top and bottom. The flames are not colored. |
Provenance |
From the Gehman family of Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County. An identically colored copy of this broadside is in the Free Library of Philadelphia collection (item #FLP 157). Other copies exist with similar coloring. The idea of this house blessing with twelve hour reminder was copied by the Ephrata Cloister press in 1785, but with a different text. Numerous copies (in at least two editions, one dated 1785) were printed and hand-decorated by Heinrich Otto. Each decoration is slightly unique. In addition to this Augsburg broadside, the Gehman family had two manuscript versions (by two different artists) copied from Otto decorated print versions (items #1990.8.2-3). |
