Notes |
Inscribed: "25 cts" in pencil below bookplate DVD transcription: 26.00:25 and 03:30 Luther's small catechism [in German] - William G. Mentz, Philadelphia --contains a Fraktur bookplate identifying the owner as Samuel Musselman; At Alan's question, Clarence states that he does not know if this was the schoolteacher Samuel Musselman or not. At 03:30, John and Alan guess that this was the Samuel Musselman who carved tombstones. John notes that Musselman "began as a Mennonite…from up around Milford or someplace, [then] came down here and fell under other [Dunkard] influence. And we can assume that if he did, he was rebaptized." The other men agree. [NOTE: It seems unlikely that the book would have belonged to tombstone carver Samuel Musselman, since he ended up in Nebraska, and would have been a bit old to receive this book that looks like it was printed in the 1840s. The book probably belonged to Samuel M. Musselman (1835-1902), son of Samuel and Susanna Moyer Musselman of northern Bucks County. Samuel Jr. never married and is buried in the Saucon Mennonite cemetery. FLM.] |
