Description |
Ladies two piece dress made out of a black silk and wool blend. Both pieces are machine constructed with hand finishing details. a) The bodice has a high neckline with an attached self-fabric underlayer. There is an asymetrical hook and closure which close on the back of the proper right shoulder. Once closed the bodice appears to have two large pin tucks and a pleated underlayer. The tucks fan downward into a tighter pleated look at the attached waistband. The long and coat style sleeves are set into the arm syce with some gathering at the shoulder. The sleeves also have a wide cuff. The inset waistband has a center hook and eye closure and a slight flounce. The hem is shorter in the front than the back, emphasizing the peplum look. There is also a snap at the back center, which was probably added later, and was used to fix a trimming of some variation. The bodice is lined in a light blue/grey printed striped cotton and there is an attached inner panel, made out of black glazed cotton, with a hook and eye closure. An unidentified boning has been inserted into the seams. b) The skirt is gored and lies flat. The inset waistband has a hook and eye closure at the back. The inside of the waistband is lined in black silk but the rest of the skirt is unlined. |
Provenance |
The dress was probably worn by Elizabeth "Eliza" D. Clemmer Rittenhouse (1840-1921), wife of Jacob K. Rittenhouse (1838-1913); residents of Towamencin Township, Montgomery County. |
