Fraktur decorated bookplate on ruled paper with inscription: "Dieses Buch Gehert Mir Jacob Letherman, und Ward Gebohren Den 21ten Merch 1878. Geschrieben den 13ten Februarius 1896. PD" (This book belongs to me Jacob Leatherman, and [I] was born the 21st of March 1878. Written the 13th February, 1896). Colors: black, red, light-blue, yellow. The initials of the artist "PD", are in the bottom right-hand corner under the date 1896. It appears that some color was added (perhaps in crayon) to the borders at a later date. |
Provenance |
Found loose in an 1894 German-English New Testament, signed by "Miss Mary Miller, Bedminster, Pa." Was not made for that book, since the bookplate was smaller than the book's pages. Jacob M. Leatherman (1878-1963) was married to Esther "Hettie" D. Miller, sister of Mary Miller. The bookplate and the New Testament were passed down in the Miller-Frederick family to Mary O. Miller who married Nelson H. Frederick; to their daughter Catherine (the donor). The initials of the artist "PD" could stand for Peter Detweiler (1844-1896), who perhaps was a teacher in the German school (or German Sunday School) which was held in the old Deep Run Schoolhouse, next to the Deep Run East Mennonite meetinghouse, in the mid 1890s. Peter Detweiler was married to Catharine Godshalk, daughter of Preacher Samuel Godshalk (1817-1896), who was a promoter of this German School at Deep Run. Stylistically and historically, this bookplate seems to be related to a couple of other fraktur manuscripts in the MHC collection which were made in the Deep Run German School in 1896-97 (see Hist. Mss. 428). |
