Description |
Framed "Comprehensive Bible Chart", 1912 used by Jonas L. Derstine. |
Provenance |
Chart created by Rev. Lewis H. Jamison of Los Angeles, copyrighted 1912. L. H. Jamison was a Presbyterian minister associated with the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (later known as Biola College) and a voice in the growing Protestant dispensationalist-fundamentalist movement of that era. This colorful chart belonged to Jonas L. Derstine (1883-1951) of Franconia Township, a member and Sunday School teacher in the Souderton Mennonite Church, and symbolizes how some local Mennonites were caught up in this controversial movement. Jonas was eventually asked to stop teaching Sunday School by the ministers of the Souderton congregation because of his unorthodox views and teaching. In the last year of his life, he joined the new Calvary Mennonite Church in Souderton, a congregation which endorsed dispensationalist theology and teaching. |
