Description Large vorschrift in yellow, black, and brown. The text reads: "Wache Dich Auf Jerusalem und Trett auf die hoehe..." (from Baruch 5:5). Also has text of verses 4-6 of hymn number 404 in the Zions Harfe (Wiue flieht dakin der menschen zeit). Verse 4: "Ach lehre mich o Gottes Sohn! So lang ich in der hutten wohn..." Signed "Heinrich S. Bauer, May 24, 1853".
Provenance Made and signed by 17-year-old Henry S. Bower (1836-1909), son of John & Barbara Stauffer Bower, of Skippack Township, Montgomery County. He may have been a schoolteacher at the time. In 1857 he married Anna S. Reiff (1832-1888) of Skippack and had eight children. After Anna's death, he remarried to widow Catherine N. Saylor Alderfer (1842-1927). Ordained a minister in the Salford Mennonite congregation in 1865, he was also a famer, watchmaker, and geneologist.
