Description |
Pair of men's ankle high leather boots. The boots are styled like a congress shape with an insert of black ribbed elastic cotton. Each boot has a matching khaki cotton twill loop at the front and back of the inside of the shoe. They have a slightly squared toe and three lines of machine stitching along the vamp section of the boot. They have a 1.00" high block heel and a hammered wood nail leather sole which is embossed with the retailer's mark "BEST MADE SHOES FREED BROS' RICHLANDTOWN, PA." The boots are lined in a cream cotton and stamped with "HUB GORE." This kind of boot was worn by many older Mennonite men around the turn of the century. |
Provenance |
Made by Freed Brothers, a manufacturer and wholesaler of shoes in Richlandtown, PA. Freed Bros. were established in 1851 and operated until 1943. Freed Bros. shoes were carried at Frederick's Shoe Store in Souderton, Pennsylvania, which is the source of this donation. |
