New Testament (1884) with three small pages of calligraphy-fraktur writing dated 1892, signed by Jacob Gross. The first page of inscription reads: "1892 Dieses Neue Testament gehoret mir Daniel Gehman. Es wurde mir gegeben von meinem Grossvater Johannes Gross, als ein geschenk, in diesem buch saget es uns was wir thun sollen..." |
Provenance |
1884 German New Testament owned by Daniel G. Gahman with three pages of fraktur-calligraphy writing, dated 1892, signed by 85 year-old Jacob Gross. Jacob W. Gross (1807-1900) of New Britain Township, Bucks County was earlier a German schoolmaster in the Mennonite communities of that area, from about 1830 to 1835. After retiring from school teaching, he became a farmer and weaver, but continued to do calligraphy work in the Mennonite community, making family registers, bookplates, and other documents. Daniel G. Gahman (1878-1956) lived in Bedminster Township, and married Maggie O. Histand in 1902. |
