Description |
A ladies two piece wedding dress made out of black wool serge. Both pieces are machine constructed with hand finishing details. a) The bodice has a self-fabric stand up collar that closes in the back with a hook and eye. There is a center button closure comprised of seventeen buttons (missing six buttons). The long gigot, or leg o' mutton, sleeves are set into the arm syce with gathering and volume at the shoulder. The waistline is pointed in both the front and back. The bodice is lined with two different printed cream cottons with metal boning inserted into each of the seams. There is an inside proper right chest pocket made out of black cotton that has been handstitched on. b) The matching skirt is wide and A-line with gores at the waistline. The only decorations are four applied black silk satin ribbon bands attached near the hem. There is a olive green cotton used for the waistband with a hook and eye closure at the back. The skirt is lined in black glazed cotton and the hem is trimmed with black velvet. There are two black cotton loops attached to the inside of the waistband. |

Worn by Martha "Mattie" K. Clemmer (1876-1956) at her circa 1896 wedding to Alfred S. Detweiler (1873-1953). They lived in Bucks County and were members of the Doylestown Mennonite Congregation. The dress was inherited by a step-granddaughter, the donor. |
