A man's machine made frock coat made out of a black wool twill. There is a notched lapel collar and a high four button closure (missing both) just above the waist seam. There is a slit pocket on the outer left chest. Starting from the waist down, the coat is left open with rounded flaps. At the back there is a single vent and there is a hidden pocket in the fold of the right flap. The coat is lined in black silk and the sleeves are lined in a cream cotton with brown striped print. There are two inside chest pockets and one small inner fob pocket along the inside waist seam and is lined with brown glazed cotton, which is also used to line the tail pocket. Was worn with a matching vest and hat, see objects 1989.9.2-3. |
Provenance |
Worn by Preacher Michael R. Moyer (1836-1912). He was ordained in 1883 into the Franconia Conference and served as minister until his death. The coat was passed down to his son, Allen C. Moyer (1867-1953), and then to his son Michael C. Moyer (1894-1989), whose estate donated it to MHC. |
