Description |
A ladies two piece dress made out of light brown silk. Both pieces are machine constructed with hand finishing details. a) The bodice has a high rounded neckline with a heavily ruffled underlayer that hides the hook and eye closure running down the center. Flanking the underlayer is an applied trimming of black coil and clear and brown glass beading. The underlayer is also cut short with the side flaps extending down. The semi-gigot sleeves are set into the arm syce with gathering and volume at the shoulders. At the cuff there is another application of the same beaded trim and a self-fabric pleated ruffle attached to the inside of the cuff. At the back there is princess seaming that fans down into a peplum hem. The bodice is lined in light brown cotton with metal boning inserted into the seams. There is also an attached light brown cotton inner chest pocket that has been handstitched on. b) The skirt is wide and flat with gores at the waist. At the hem there is an attached self-fabric ruffle applied. The skirt has a hook and closure at the back waist. The skirt is lined in a light brown cotton and at the hem there is an application of black horsehair and glazed brown cotton, which probably adds supports to the ruffle. |
Provenance |
Worn by Catherine Jane "Jennie" Heckler Mensch (1873-1960), probably before her marriage in 1895 to Abraham B. Mensch (1863-1934) (according to the donor). She was the daughter of Franklin R. Heckler (1843-1878) and Mary Ann Dresher Heckler (Seipt) (1851-1925), but after her father's death they lived with her maternal grandparents, Jacob K. Dresher (1828-1912) and Catharine E. Wile Dresher (1830-1917) in Worcester Township, Montgomery County. |
