Description |
Manuscript tunebook with fraktur bookplate for Jacob Hunsperger (Hunsberger) in the Skippack School, May 14, 1804. The bookplate is colored in red, black and yellow. The name Jacob Hunsperger is in large fraktur lettering; the capitals J and H in red, decorated with stylized leafy vines; the lower-case letters vary between red with black dots, black with red dots, and yellow with red dots. Above the name are natural-looking vines with red and black leaves. Two lines of text (including date and location) are below the name, in German script. A prominent triple border surrounds; the inner border is wide, with diagonal sections of black and red alternating all around and sloped yellow sections in the center of top and bottom, and with red-and-black stars in the upper corners; the outer two borders are narrower, the inner one black and the outer one red. The black and some red ink has transferred onto the facing flyleaf; this flyleaf also contains two instances of practice of the German script text: "Sing Schüller In der Schippacher Schule". The tunebook has a thin paperboard cover, green on the outside. The name "Jacob Hunsperger" is inscribed on the front in German script and a now unreadable inscription on the rear outside cover. An ownership inscription by Jacob Hunsperger in English script inside the rear cover has been scratched out and is mostly unreadable. There are six double-sided pages and one single-sided page of tunes, all in the same hand as the bookplate, and generally in alphabetical order, with semitones, intervals and the typical "Jesulein, bleibe mein" tune at the beginning. Each page carries four tunes, 52 tunes total. Several blank flyleaves follow, the last of which bears the name "Mary???a Hunsberger[?] inscribed in pencil. |
