Bookplate: "Diesses Testament gehöret Mir Sara Merkel in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery, August den 10ten, Anno 1799". |
Notes |
This New Testament is probably the 1796 Carl Cist edition, Philadelphia (page 212 is not misnumbered, see PGS Arndt, #815, #1039). DVD transcription: 6.42:55 New Testament [in German] --title page missing --belonged to Sara Merkel; inscribed with a "minor" bookplate by Andreas Kolb in Lower Salford, 1799. --John also comments that the name Merkel/Markley probably goes back to Huguenot origins in Europe. Alan agrees that this is possible. --It is thought that Sara Merkel probably got this New Testament in school, and Andreas Kolb would have been her teacher. This was probably in the schoolhouse at the Salford Mennonite meetinghouse. John clarifies, however, that the name Markley is from over near or above Lucon, and he adds that there was wonderful Brachtheiser fraktur made for Philip Markley. |
Provenance |
Probably made for Sarah Markley (Benner) (1788-1847), daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Ruhl Markley of Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County. In adulthood she married Abraham Benner (1779-1829), and they are buried in the Salford Mennonite cemetery. According to Mary Jane Lederach Hershey's data sheets on fraktur (Hist. Mss. 407), the donor bought this book from antique dealer Hattie Brunner, who said it came from Cornelius Weygandt's collection. |
