Inscription on bookplate reads: "Dieses Harmonische Melodeyen Buchlein Gehoret Anna Schimmel, Sing Schuler in der Springfielder Schule. Geschrieben den 13ten Hornung [February] im Jahr unsers Herrn A.D. 1821." The tunebook is almost completely filled with manuscript hymntunes and first lines. |
Provenance |
Manuscript hymn-tune booklet dated February 1821, made for Anna Schimmel in the Springfield [meetinghouse] School, in Bucks County. Has a nice fraktur bookplate attributed to Schoolmaster Jacob Oberholtzer (Overholt). Anna Schimmel has not been genealogically identified, but she must have been from the early Mennonite Schimmel family in the Springfield Township area. The booklet eventually ended up in the collection of the late Kirke Bryan, attorney and PA German decorative arts collector of Norristown, PA. Bryan consigned it to Alderfer's Auction Center, where it was sold in September 1990 and purchased by Henry L. Rosenberger, who then placed it on indefinite loan at the Menonite Heritage Center, and eventually donated it. |
