Description |
Friendship Quilt comprised of a 4 x 4 block formation with embroidered names. Each block averages 15.50" x 15.50" and is made of plain cream cotton ground with a pink and red embroidered sun in the lower right corner. There is also an embroidered name in various silk embroidery floss. For the complete list of names and location please see the attached table. Seperating each block is a 2.50" wide sashing and surrounding border made of a pink cotton with a blue and white floral print and cornerstones made of plain blue (faded) chambray. There is 3/8" wide foldover binding from back to front. The entire quilt has diamond cross-hatching and is handstitched with pink thread and a SPI of 5-9. Friendship quilt, made in 1940, by the Junior Sewing Circle of Towamencin Mennonite Church, Kulpsville, PA. Their teacher was Gertrude Ziegler. The quilt was given to Frances K. Snyder (1926-2003) of Hatfield, Montgomery County after she contracted polio in September 1939. This quilt was cataloged in the 1991 Goschenhoppen Historians Quilt Round-Up. After Frances Snyder's death, the quilt was donated to the MHC by her sister Ruth Snyder Hagey. |
