Description |
A handstitched market wallet made out of handspun bleached plain weave linen. There is a center opening with a 16.50" long slit and a 1/8" wide foldover hem. The length of the slit is suggestive because one end of the wallet has been cut and pieces removed. There is a cross-stitched name alongside the slit, which reads "HENRIG SCHELLE" [Henry Shelly] in red cotton. |
Provenance |
Owned by Henry T. Shelly (1813-1888), husband of Mary S. Moyer Shelly (1813-1890). They lived near Quakertown, Bucks County and were members of the West Swamp Mennonite Church. The wallet was passed down to his great-granddaughter, the donor. |
