Description |
Checkerboard Quilt comprised of squares of plain and printed cottons. Each square averages 3.750" x 3.750" and is made out of a various printed cottons. Examples of the printed cottons are cheater crazy quilt prints, various shirting and picotage prints in various colors and one print that features the year "1876." There is a 1/8" wide foldover binding from back to front. The quilt is handstitched with brown thread and a SPI of 6. There is no batting inserted into this quilt. The back is comprised of a brown and white dotted cotton with a dark brown and orange abstract print. A muslin sleeve has been attached to the back for hanging purposes. |
Provenance |
Made by Mary B. (Bower) Mensch (1831-1906), wife of Preacher Jacob B. Mensch (1835-1912). They lived in Skippack Township, Montgomery County and were members of the Upper Skippack Mennonite congregation. The quilt was passed down to her granddaughter, Mary H. (Mensch) Lederach (1898-1980), and then to her daughter, the donor. |
